Sunday walk: 9 September - Hutton-le-Hole and Ryedale villages

Start: 10am prompt

Leaders: Martin/Jenny

Meet at North York Moors National Park Authority's car park in 
Hutton-le-Hole (There is a fee for parking). From York, enter the village, drive to the end and take right hand turn out of village, car park on your right.

Distance: 7 miles

Time: 4 hours

Difficulty: Easy/moderate

Toilets: Hutton-le-Hole car park

Refreshments: Tea rooms in Hutton-le-Hole, pubs in Hutton-le-Hole, 
Appleton-le-Moors and Lastingham

The walk covers three Ryedale villages (Hutton-le-Hole, 
Appleton-le-Moors and Lastingham) across the foothills of the North York 
Moors. The route goes along centuries-old tracks, linked by quiet field 
paths. The churches at Lastingham and Appleton-le-Moors are well worth a 
visit.

Tuesday walk: Tuesday 28th August - Leavening, Burythorpe and Birdsall

Start: 10am prompt

Parking: Roadside in Leavening.

Leader: Ali

Distance: 8 miles

Time: approx. 3.5 hours

Toilets and refreshments: Pubs in Leavening and Acklam, if they are open . I'll be checking that this weekend.

This easy walk is on typical Wolds farmland on the border of the Howardian hills, open countryside, a mixture of arable and pasture and visiting 3 attractive villages. Mostly on good paths and tracks with a little road walking.

Sunday walk: 12th August - Rievaulx Abbey from Old Byland

Start: 10am prompt. Old Byland village. Park considerately in the village.

Leader: Joe

Distance: 6 miles (a shorter one given the heat potential!)

Time: 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 hours

Level of difficulty: Easy

Refreshments and toilets: public toilets at Rievaulx Abbey and then at the Sutton Bank Visitor Centre.

Appreciate the idyllic environment where Rievaulx Abbey flourished and where Byland Abbey was also originally established. This walk is mostly woodland and field paths with two easy gradients.

Tuesday walk: Tuesday 31st. July - Settrington-North Grimston circular walk

Start: 10am prompt

Parking: Off road at Settringham Beacon. From Malton ,take the road to North Grimston, but before reaching the village turn left onto Grimston  Lane which then leads onto Back Lane. At T junction turn right. Do not go into Settringham village. Go up the hill and take the 1st turning on the right and go about a mile and parking is on the left where the Centenary way crosses the road.

Distance: 8 1/ 2 miles, but can be shortened to about 7miles if required

Level of difficulty: Moderate

Refreshments:  Middleton Arms pub at North Grimston

A Wolds walk on good paths and tracks with a bit of road walking. There are 3steepish ascents, but only 2 if the walk is shortened!

Sunday walk: Sitting Man on Castleton Rigg - Sunday 8 July

Start: 10am prompt - parking area just to the west of Castleton. Immediately after the cattle grid, turn left just as the road bears right and drops into Castleton.  Parking is 200m on the right hand side. 

Leader: Keith

Distance: 8.5 miles

Time: 4-5 hours

Level of difficulty: Fairly strenuous (150 fitbit stairs). Walking is on roads,  paths & fields. 

Facilities: No toilets, but there are some big gorse bushes to hide behind at the start! There are cafes and pubs in Castleton.


The Sitting Man is a 10ft sculpture by Sean Henry on Castleton Rigg overlooking Westerdale. The walk will take us to Westerdale to view the statue from a distance before climbing up to the sculpture for lunch. We will return to Castleton along Danby Dale.

There is a long climb from Westerdale up to the sculpture which is steepish in places. The rest of the walk is typically North York Moors.

Tuesday walk: 26 June - Pocklington canal

Start: 10am prompt from Market Place, Pocklington (opposite Natwest Bank)

Distance: 9 miles

Time: 4.5 hours

Level of difficulty: Easy

Refreshments and toilets: Pockington towwn centre and Meditation centre. 

This is an easy route in the vale of York below the western slopes of the Wolds. The route follows the scenic Pocklington canal, quiet country lanes and woodlands.

Sunday walk: 10 June - Tadcaster and Healaugh

Start: 10am prompt. Meet outside the Britannia Inn next to the bridge over the Wharfe.

Distance: 8 miles

Time: 4 hours

Level of difficulty: Easy

Refreshments and toilets: Tadcaster town centre at end of walk

The walk leaves Tadcaster via the impressive viaduct across the river, before heading across fields past the site of a medieval monastery towards the village of Healaugh, distinguished by its fine Norman church, before returning to Tadcaster for refreshment.
