New Years Day walk: Millington Wood - 10am - Friday 1 January 2021

 New Years Day walk details:

Start location: Millington Woods car park - drive through Millington, past the church on your right, and out Woodgate Road. Go past Woodgate Farm (YO42 1TZ). About 250yds later there are a couple of hairpin bends, with parking accessed off second bend, signposted.

Start: 10am prompt

Distance: 8 miles

Leader: Steve + others as required

Level of difficulty: moderate, includes some hills and inevitably some mud

Refreshments: none

A lovely walk taking in several dales.

A great opportunity to start the new year with a few miles under your belt.

Refreshments and Toilets: Pub at North Grimston, although it may not be possible to obtain refreshments due to Covid restrictions. Instead bring your own if weather forecast permits

Time: 4 hours

The walk begins at Settrington, passes through North Grimston and explores Settrington Beacon with some great views.

It's a varied walk which includes a variety of walking surfaces including (unfortunately) some tarmac paths. 

In the spirit of Christmas, wear something festive if you can, sprig of holly, tinsel, santa hat...

Midweek Walk - Thixendale - Tuesday 27th October 2020 - 10:00 am

Location: Thixendale. (Yorkshire Wolds)

Parking: Main street, near the (old) pub

Distance: ~8 miles

Level of difficulty: Moderate

Toilets: None - but sufficient bushes

Cafe: Probably closed

A classic Wolds walk starting in Thixendale & following the Wolds Way footpath to the medieval village of Wharram Percy where we will have lunch, before returning.

The walk follows national trails along fields, farm tracks and quiet roads. There are 2 steepish climbs at the start and 1 steepish decent at the end. Please bear in mind that it is late October so there will be parts of the walk which will not be mud-free!

Weather permitting there are some fabulous views on the walk.

Start: 10am from outside Stapylton Arms, Wass

Distance: 8.3 miles

Level of difficulty: Moderate. 

Facilities: Pub at end with some outdoor seating.

Wass, Olstead, 'White Horse View' for lunch (as long as bull isn't in field...) , then returning via Byland Abbey

Two short scrambles. Inclines at beginning and end. Some nettles on one path. Livestock in some fields.

Level of difficulty: Easy/moderate (two steady climbs)

Refreshments: Royal Oak pub or tea room at Minskip Farm

The walk leaves Burton Leonard to South Stainley on to Ripon Rowel walk then back to Brearton before heading back to Burton Leonard.

This week's midweek walk is a circular walk from Appleton Roebuck. We will walk down to Acaster Selby then follow the river upstream to Acaster Malbis before returning across country to Appleton Roebuck.

Facilities: Shops at start/end and during walk through Selby

A mixed terrain walk. Starting in Thorpe Willoughby we head into farming countryside through the Vale of York, arriving in Selby for a walk through the town past the Abbey towards Selby Canal. The route by the canal follows the Trans Pennine Trail, passing Burton Hall, and onwards towards Brayton Barff, a hidden reservoir, before returning to Thorpe Willoughby.

We will stop during the walk for a refreshment and lunch break so bring a pack up as normal.

Bring refreshments and a rug to sit on the village green afterwards in lieu of going to a cafe if you wish.

Facilities: Cafes and pubs in Leyburn and Castle Bolton

This walk - as featured on BBC1 a couple of months ago (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000brwb) provides wonderful scenery as we proceed along Wensleydale towards Castle Bolton.

Take time out from the hustle and bustle of life to indulge in Wensleydale and its wonderful vistas. Along this ramble through the dale, discover evidence of an industrial past and heritage railway line. We will walk onwards to the impressive Bolton Castle, the location of Mary Queen of Scots' imprisonment in 1568. Returning via the river Ure to Leyburn and socially distanced group picnic.

We will stop during the walk for a refreshment and lunch break so bring a pack up as normal.

Weather permitting, we hope to have a picnic afterwards, so bring food and drink. There might even be the possibility of a pint from a local pub...

Tuesday walk: York - 25 February

Date / Time: Tuesday 25th Feb @ 10.00 am

Meeting Point: Car Park (Free) at the new Burnholme Community Centre (Explore) on Bad Bargain Lane. (Postcode: YO31 0HA)

Distance: 8.0 miles

Level of difficulty: Easy

Toilets & Café: are at the Centre + toilets & cafes en-route.

The walk will explore the green areas of Tang Hall before picking up the City Walls at Foss Islands. After following the walls back to Foss Islands we will return to Burnholme visiting some of the green areas of Heworth. The Ouse is very high at the moment and is quite a spectacle as we cross over it.

Dogs are not allowed on the City Walls, but in many places they can be led alongside & there will be parts of the walk where they can run free.

There are plenty of cafes on the circuit & the plan is to stop off at one for a coffee break. (So bring some money!)

It’s a figure of eight walk looking at Thomason waterfall, Nelly Ayer Foss waterfall then drop down to mall Mallyan spout waterfall head back to Goathland.

Midweek walk: Tuesday 28th January 2020 - Skipwith Common

Start: 10.00 am at King Rudding Lane car-park on the edge of Skipwith Common

Follow the A19 South from York until you reach the right hand turning for Riccall. Stay on the A19 as you pass this turning then after approx. 1/2 mile  take the first left hand turn off the A19. Follow this road for approx. 1 mile & you will reach the car park. 

Please note the car park we are using is on the WEST of the Common. (There is another car park called Sands Lane car park which is quite close to Skipwith on the east side of the Common. DO NOT USE THIS ONE).

Distance: 7.6 miles

Level of difficulty: Easy

Amenities: None 

Terrain: Woodland paths, Farm tracks & 1 mile of road walking

Cafe: There is one at the Selby Garden Centre in Osgodby

The walk is around Skipwith Common & the village of Skipwith. The walk is suitable for dogs, but it is requested that dogs are kept on a lead on the Common as deer, sheep & cattle are free to roam.

Sunday walk: York, Huntington and New Earswick - 12 January

Start: 10am Clifton Alliance Cricket Club car park,. Postcode: YO30 5RF

Directions to start: Turn off the A19 (Shipton Road) into Clifton Park Avenue as if you are going to the Dormouse pub. If you are coming from the city centre it is a left turn towards the Dormouse, right turn if you are approaching from the ring road. Go past the entrance drive to the Dormouse and take the first left - a rough road/track with a big Clifton Alliance Cricket Club sign. Take this road/track to the end where there is a car park behind the Clifton Alliance clubhouse. We have permission from the club to park there. Do not confuse Clifton Alliance CC with the neighbouring York CC at Clifton Park. Route: Clifton Ings, new footbridge over the Ouse, Bootham Park Hospital grounds, Wigginton Road/Haxby Road, picking up the Foss Walk by the river to Huntington, returning to York via New Easrwick, Bootham Stray and Clifton Backies. Although it is a walk within the York ring road it goes via a surprising number of gren spaces.
Distance: 7 to 8 miles. This will depend on the weather and ground conditions on the day.

Level of difficulty: Easy. Flat. When this walk was reckkied just before Christmas parts were very wet and muddy so be prepared! If it is too bad to walk across some of the fields there are alternative stretches on paved paths.
