Charity walk at Castle Howard - Sunday 20th June 2010
You may be interested in a forthcoming charity walk in aid of New Futures Nepal.
The walk will take place on Sunday 20th June - there are three to choose from for varying abilities: 2, 5 or 15 miles.
Last year, the Ghurka's cooked a curry on site, another good reason for attending if raising money for orphanages in Nepal is not a good enough reason.

Sutton Bank, White Horse of Kilburn and Gormire Lake - Sunday 9th May
Much of this walk is visible from the viewpoint by the start of the walk, at the top of Sutton Bank. To the left, the way runs above the almost vertical cliffs of Roulston Scar, beyond which, but as yet hidden, lies the White Horse of Kilburn. Spread below are the Hood Hill plantations and tree-fringed waters of Gormire Lake.
The return is along the Cleveland Way, winding at the edge of a precipice above Whitestone Cliff and Sutton Brow, which form a dramatic boundary to the rolling Hambleton Hills that stretch away behind. In the woodland beneath the cliffs and by the lake we may well see squirrels and perhaps even deer, while the views from the escarpment are outstanding, and amply reward the climb to its airy heights.

Hutton-le-Hole/Lastingham - Sunday 11th April
Two picturesque villages and a church with a unique crypt are some of the interesting features on this relatively easy walk. Much of it lies along fieldd paths and tracks on the southern edge of the moors amidst the Tabular Hills. Yet, it wasalso a walk of great scenic variety, with the bleak and open moorland to the north contrasting with the flatter and lusher landscape of the Vale of Pickering to the south.
Weekend walks 2010
Following last years' weekend walk in the Lakes, Oddsocks are organising two weekend walks for 2010 as follows:
Yorkshire Three Peaks
The challenge is to walk the three Yorkshire peaks, comprising Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and last but not least Ingleborough in one 24.5 mile go.
The walk will be on Saturday 5th June, starting early in the morning from Horton in Ribblesdale.
The weekend will comprise arriving in the area on Friday 4th June (several of us are already booked into accomodation in nearby Austwick), do the walk on Saturday 5th June and celebrate in the local bars after, and then depart home on Sunday 6th June.
Of course, if you are not sure you can make the full 24.5 miles and three peaks, still come along and do one or two peaks and then return along the path to the start point in Horton in Ribblesdale.
If you want to join us or want further information, contact us.
Weekend in the Cheviots
We are planning a walking weekend in the wonderful and unspoilt Cheviot Hills in Northumberland.
The dates are Friday 24th to Sunday 26th September 2010.
More details to appear shortly.

Sinnington - 14th March 2010
Fourteen walkers set out on a sunny and warm (compared to recent times) morning along the main street of Sinnington towards the 'river to know-where'. We headed up into the woods surrounding the river, enjoying snowdrops along the paths. Unfortunately, the daffodils and other bulbs were still to show their faces in the sun due to the cold winter.
Once up above the river we had magnificent views of the moors to the north and vale of York to the south. Our path remained close to the river throughout and eventually we had lunch by a lovely sloping wooden footbridge before heading away from the river toward Appleton le Moors.
Upon leaving the village, we headed back towards the river, arriving in the village of Sinnington and heading into the pub just before brief downpour and hail shower for a good pint.
See you all next month.

Fountains Abbey - 14 February 2010
Twenty-seven people and one dog turned up at the Fountains Abbey visitor centre.
We started out from the car park an headed down towards the lower entrance before skirting around the perimeter wall of the Abbey grounds. We then moved out across farm land, and sunk into the cold, wet mud of winter. We then walked through a valley, beside a stream and across lovely stone bridges. We finally made it down to the Studley Royal entrance, where we had lunch overlooking the lakes in the sun. Heart shaped biscuits were offered around to bring a hint of Valentine's into the occasion.
After lunch, we walked up a steap hill, across fields and finally into woodland, where the mud was thick and slippery. However, we only had one casualty who lost his shoe.
We finally, made our way out of the woods and mud and arrived back into the Fountain's Abbey car park. Once boots were changed, a welcome cup of coffee was had in the cafe.
