Westerdale Moor - Sunday 12 August 2012

Circular walk starting from Red Lion Inn on Blakey Ridge walking around Westerdale Moor.
Date: Sunday 12th August 2012

Start: 10:00 Red Lion Inn, Blakey Ridge (situated 6 miles north of Hutton-Le-Hole on Blakey Road).
Anders will be at Bannatyne’s at 09:00 if anyone would like a lift.



Distance: Approx 10 miles. (About 5 hours)



Level of difficulty: Moderate.



Refreshments/Toilets: Red Lion Inn and Westerdale (half way).



Westerdale, in the upper reaches of Eskdale, is surrounded by lofty moorland and has a lonely grandeur. We are starting from Red Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge and walk at the head of Rosedale, passing two of the many crosses that served as way marks to guide travellers of an earlier age.

After having reached Westerdale, and having had lunch, we turn back to Red Lion Inn following River Esk.

For those who are thirsty and hungry we stop at the Inn before going home.

Weekend walk: Hawes - 13-15 July 2012

The details are as follows:

Location: Hawes

Arrive: Friday 13 July - evening - meet up for a pub meal at 7pm at The Old Board Inn, Marketplace, Hawes

Main walk: Saturday 14 July - 10am start - this will be an approx. 10 mile walk in the surrounding area, followed by evening meal in local establishment

Sunday walk: Sunday 15 July - 10am start - this will be a shorter approx 6 mile walk in the surrounding area.

Depart: Sunday 15 July mid afternoon.

Accomodation: arrange your own accomodation in the various B&B's or hotels in Hawes. There are numerous available if you search the web.

Parking: Park up near the church. You pass it if approach it from Pocklington

Nine miles of undulating Wolds walking. Nothing too steep nor flat, just right.

White Horse, Kilburn - Sunday 10 June 2012

Location: Kilburn and Sutton Bank

Date: Sunday 10th June 2012
Start: 10am (or 9am if seeking a lift from Bannatynes but let me know so I can arrange)
Leader: Les
Distance: 8 miles
Level of difficulty: Moderate walk (which will done at a leisurely stroll) of undulating terrain around the Sutton Bank area.
Parking: From A170 turn South signed Gliding Club approx 500m E of Sutton Bank Visotors' Centre.  Head past the Gliding Club then downhill (narrow road), and the car park is clearly visible on right.  Alternatively, from Kilburn village heading north - turn left approx 500yds after leaving Kilburn, signed White Horse 1/2 mile.  Car park is on the left after half a mile.
Refreshments: None available en route; bring your own! Forresters pub in Kilburn if anyone fancies a libation later.

Pateley Bridge and Brimham Rocks - Sunday 13 May

Location: Pateley Bridge and Brimham Rocks
Date: Sunday 13 May
Start: 10am. Meet up in car park next to bridge in Pateley Bridge.

Distance: 9 miles (approx. 5 hours)
Level of difficulty: moderate
Description:
The walk takes an elevated route out of Pateley Bridge, offering lovely views as it heads towards Brimham Rocks. From the rocks the walk heads for Smelthouses, eventually reaching the River Nidd, alongside which it returns to the start.
Facilities: Toilets next to car park and cafes/pubs in Pateley Bridge.

Keld to Tan Hill Inn - Sunday 15 April

Location: Keld in Swaledale

Date: Sunday 15th April

Walk leader: Steve Poile

Start: 10am from the centre of the village. Park in the farm car park (£2 in the honesty box).
Let me know if anyone needs a lift from Bannatyne's at 8am.

Distance: 9.5 miles

Level of difficulty: moderate

Refreshments/toilets: At about half way through the walk we will arrive at Tan Hill Inn, reputedly the highest pub in Britain, so a good place for lunch. At the end of the walk, we can find somewhere in Richmond for a drink if anyone is interested.

We will set off from the hamlet of Keld that lies at the head of Swaledale, with its cascading waterfalls. We head onto the Pennine Way towards Stonesdale Moor arriving at Tan Hill Inn for refreshements. This is reputedly the highest pub in Britain. We then head towards the Nine Standards Rigg, a line of cairns supposedly erected by the Roman army to look like troops from a distance. Then we head back towards Stonesdale Beck and back towards Keld.
