Hawnby - 3 December

A great walk from a pretty village over two small hills, providing great views over Ryedale and Bilsdale.  Medium walk of just over 6 miles.

Parking roadside at Hawnby church which is half a mile west of the village on the Kepwick road. Hawnby village is six miles north of Helmsley.

Good pub in the village.

Kirkham Priory - Wednesday 19 November

Start: 10am at Kirkham Priory

Distance: 7-8 miles

Level of difficulty: Easy

We leave Kirkham Priory and head for the village of Crambe, cross the railway line and then head for the River Derwent. A short walk along the river past Howsham  Mill and then over the bridge to Howsham. We then walk through Howsham Wood and back to Kirkham. There is a little road walking. It might be rather muddy in the woods.

Millington Dale near Pocklington - Sunday 9th November

Start: 10:00 am at the church in Millington (there is off road parking on Swineridge Lane at the back of the church which is on Church Lane)

Distance: 7 and half miles

Difficulty: Moderate - a couple of steep hills but they are short

Toilets and Refreshments: No public toilets along the route.

Good pub (The Gate Inn) and tearoom (the Amblers Rest), both in Millington so convenient for the end of the walk.

Some sections of road walking, but they are quiet roads. Great views on a clear day along the route.

Wednesday 22 October - Hackness and Whisper Dale

WhisperDales is an attractive hidden valley enclosed by shapely wooded hills leading to great views from Reasty Bank towards the coast.

Turn off the A170 Pickering to Scarborough road at East Ayton. along Forge Valley.

The Nidd Gorge: A walk in the woods - Sunday 12th October 2014

Start: 10:00 am at Conyungham Hall car park. (Pay & Display)

Difficulty: Moderate

Toilets and Refreshments: Pubs and coffee places in Knaresborough and Bilton

We start at the Conyungham Hall car park in Knaresborough, which is situated at the 'bottom' of Knaresborough next to river Nidd. ( grid ref: SE344572)

After a short walk on the B6165 Pateley Bridge road we turn turn down to river Nidd, which we then follow all around to Bilton. We then turn back towards Knaresborough having lovely views of the landscape.

Time for drinks in Knaresborough before going home, of course.

Hardcastle Grags to Widdop - Sunday 14th September

Start: Hardcastle Crags - NT car park £5 for the day or free for NT members showing NT badge (for satnav use HX7 7AA)

Distance: 9 miles

Time: 4-5 hours

Level of difficulty: Moderate, with a few climbs

Facilities: NT cafe near start/end of the walk plus Pack Horse pub at about half way point

This beautiful walk starts at the top of Hardcastle Crags (near Hebden Bridge), heading down towards Gibson Mill with its stunning mill pond. The route then climbs gently around the valley, past the remains of a temporary viaduct and then over the moors to the Pack Horse Inn where we will stop of lunch. The Pack Horse Inn offers great lunches and beers next to an open fire. Or you can bring your own packup and eat outdoors. We then head out over the moors with lovely views in all directions. Finally, we head back down towards Gibson Mill where we can stop for coffee and cake, before heading back to the car park.

When Bridie and I reccied this walk, we took the route along the M62 and then via Halifax - fantastic industrial revolution era architecture to be seen on the hillsides all around.

Lockton, Lower Bridestones and the Hole of Horcum - 3 September

Start: Opposite Lockton cemetery, before entering the the village

Terrain: Grassy tracks and forest road

This is a lovely varied walk that takes us to the Lower Bridestones then onto the 'old wife's way' with lovely views of Blakey Topping. We then cross back over the A 169 and down into the Hole of Horcum  and back to Lockton. There are 3 ascents in all, the last one being the steepest!

Goathland - Wednesday 13 August

It is a lovely circular walk down to Mallyan Spout waterfall then following up the wooded valley of West Beck and up to the Moors and onto the Roman road.

Cloughton and Hayburn Wykes - Sunday 10 August

Starting point: We meet at 10:00 outside the old school at the cross roads in Cloughton. Parking in the village.

Leader: Anders will stop off at Bannatynes at 09:00 if someone wants a lift.

Distance: about 5 miles circular walk (if 5 is not enough, for those who are wanting more of a challenge could rewalk it backwards to make a 10 miler...)

Level of difficulty: Easy to moderate

Toilets and refreshments: Cloughton and Hayburn Wykes

A nice and easy walk following the old railway track to Hayburn Wykes where we stop for refreshments at the pub. We then walk down to Hayburn Wykes and follow the coast path back to Cloughton. Nice walk with a good variation of scenery and terrain.

There will be plenty of time to have a drink in Cloughton before returning home.

Flamborough Head - Wednesday 16th July

Distance: 7 miles

Level of difficulty: Easy to moderate, but there are several steep descents and  ascents although most of these have steps.

Most of this exhilarating route is along exposed clifftop paths around the dramatic chalk cliffs of Flamborough Head, following the headland from South Landing to Thornwick Bay. The final stretch is across the neck of the headland, passing through Flamborough village.

Easy walk on a mixture of farmland, woodland, bridelways and minor roads.

Route takes us through Kirkdale, Fadmoor and Gillamoor.

Sutton Bank - Sunday 8 June

Location: Sutton Bank, White Horse of Kilburn and Gormire Lake

Start: 10:00 am at National Park Information Centre at Sutton Bank. Anders will be at Bannatynes at 09:00 if anyone wants a lift.

Distance: 12.5 km (8 miles approx)

Time: Approx 4 hours. 

Level of difficulty: Moderate.

Food/drinks and toilets at the Information Centre. 

A nice walk with lovely and varying views. We could either have something to eat/drink after the walk at the Information Centre, or drive down to the pub in Kilburn on our way home.

Wednesday walk: Sinnington - Wednesday 18 June

Location: Sinnington, North York Moors, along the River Seven.

Date: Wednesday, 18th. June.

Start: 10am. Meet by bridge in village

Parking: Roadside

Distance: 12km (approx. 7 1/2 miles)

Time: Approx. 3 1/2 miles

Level of difficulty: Easy

An interesting walk on the edge of the North York Moors, visiting the 3 villages of Sinnington, Appleton Le Moor and Cropton. Some road walking, but mostly woodland paths and farm tracks.

There are pubs in each of the villages if a refreshment is required at the end(or during!)

All walks will be on a Wednesday, normally the third Wednesday of the month.

Dates for the new Wednesday walks are shown in the Walk dates for 2014 post.

As with the Sunday walks, all are welcome. Bring your neighbours, friends and dogs.

Turn east off the A171 Scarborough to Whitby road at Cloughton.

This wonderful coastal walk offers some excellent views into Robin Hoods Bay.  A short steep climb is made through Bay Town and an easy return is along the former Scarborough/Whitby railway.

This is a fairly flat walk on well marked paths and roads following the first part of the Foss Walk to the start of the Foss and then Crayke before leaving the trail and returning to Easingwold.
