Ash Dale and Riccal Dale - Wednesday 29th April

Parking: In Helmsley head for the B 1257 and take the first turning right between the church and a hotel. Turn right at the top and park along road or on Warwick Place which is a few yards further on on the left.

Time: Approx. 3- 3 1/2 hours.

This is a lovely varied walk mostly on forest paths and tracks.  The walks starts by heading towards Ash dale which is a narrow steep sided dale which can be quite muddy if wet. After a couple of miles we head towards Riccall Dale down a very steep hill into the Dale itself. We head back to Helmsley through the forest and woods. There is one steepish ascent. The only road walking is on a forest road.

There are toilets and plenty of cafes for refreshments after the walk in Helmsley.

Kirkbymoorside - Sunday 12 April 2015

Start point: Kirkbymoorside - meet at Post Office near the top of the main street

Parking: free on the main road

Route takes us through Kirkdale, Fadmoor and Gillamoor. Easy walk on a mixture of farmland, woodland, bridleways and minor roads. Plenty of cafes and pubs for drink and snack after the walk.

Lower Farndale - Wednesday 25th March

Start: Small car park just west of Lowna Farm and bridge on the Hutton-le-Hole to Gillamoor road.

An enjoyable walk through Lower Farndale on a wooded valley of the River Dove. A chance, I hope, to enjoy the daffodils without the crowds.Returning by farm and moorland paths over Harland Moor. Great views!

Roseberry Topping - Sunday 8 March

Location: Roseberry Topping

Start: 10am

Parking: The car park is on the right hand side as you approach Newton under Roseberry( if you end up in N u R you've gone too far!) Car park has plenty of space, but is a pay and display, which will be £4 for all day parking so car sharing would be an ideal way of sharing costs

Level of difficulty: Moderate to challenging

On a dry, mild day with excellent viewing conditions, sixteen members plus Kelby headed out from the car park for a very enjoyable walk, which upon return to the car park was washed down by a drink at the lovely Kings Head Inn.

The route is up through the woods as this is a more gentle approach. This will break the ascent into two parts then, giving people a break after the first climb.

Once we reach Roseberry Topping we will then head for Great Ayton Moor and follow the Cleveland Way across to Cooks monument where we will have lunch. There is also a bit of a climb up to Cooks monument but steady away will get everyone there.

After lunch we will head down through the forest to Dikes Lane where we will start to climb again (not too steep) heading back towards Roseberry Topping through Netwon Wood. Before this there is the last steep climb to Cliff Rigg Quarry. Total distance is 7 miles with a couple of steep ascents, but we will take it easy. Walk should take around a max. of 5 hours.There is a pub, The Kings Head Hotel in Newton should anyone wish refreshments and food after the walk.

There are some fantastic views which are well worth the climbs, and hopefully the weather will be kind to us on the day.

Brandsby - Wednesday 25th February

Parking: There is suitable roadside parking just beyond a couple of houses on the minor road on the right(sign posted to Sheriff Hutton) as you enter Brandsby from York on the B1363

Level of difficulty: Moderate

It is a variable walk on grass paths, forest tracks, a couple of muddy fields and and one little bit of road walking. There is one  steepish ascent. We leave Brandsby and head north to Yearsley and soon after head in a westerly direction towards Oulston resevoir  before heading back to Brandsby. No toilets in Brandsby.

Copmanthorpe circular walk - Sunday 8 February

Start: 10am Copmanthorpe village. Parking outside Post Office and shops in village centre

Distance: 8 miles

Level of difficulty: Easy

It's an easy pancake-flat walk, going via the High Street and Moor Lane across fields to Colton then on to Appleton Roebuck and back to Copmanthorpe.

The highest point is the wide footbridge over the East Coast main railway line - so a good day out for trainspotters.

There are only about 3 or 4 stiles to negotiate.

Newgate Bank - Wednesday 28 January

Start: 10am. Newgate Bank forestry car park which is situated by the B1257 Helmsley to Stokesly road, about 4 1/2 miles north west of Helmsley.

An easy walk along the escarpment Poppa Edge which marks the northern limit of the Tabular Hills. Great views of Bilsdale.
